4 Ways to Winterize Your Landscape

While most Maryland communities have already seen snow and ice, that doesn’t mean it’s too late to take time to protect your yard as temperatures get colder and remain chilly for the next few weeks. How can you winterize your landscape?

4 Ways to Winterize Your Landscape

  1. When temperatures are dropping into the low teens and single digits, make sure that your irrigation system is completely drained and closed. If there is still water sitting in the pipes, it could freeze and burst and lead to serious flooding and other problems.
  2. Cover up any deciduous shrubs in your yard to protect them from the worst of the cold and ice. This also makes sure that ice will not accumulate on the more delicate branches and do permanent damage.
  3. Bring in all cushions and outdoor textiles, even if they are designed to be weatherproof. They will be safest inside, and it will be easier to clean off your porch, patio, or deck with your outdoor living items inside or in a shed.
  4. Check your gutters before a snowstorm is in the forecast to make sure that there is no yard debris built up in them. Even if you did a good job removing leaves in the fall, there can still be debris present that prevents the proper drainage of water from ice and water on your roof.
