Another year, another hot and humid summer for Maryland residents. If you’re like many homeowners, your lawn could use some TLC after a summer of walking across the lawn, hot summer days and not enough rain. Late August and early September is the perfect time to care for your lawn and get a head start on next year through aeration and overseeding. JFC Grounds Maintenance works with homeowners throughout the area to keep their lawns in great condition and get them ready for next year.

What Is Lawn Aeration?

Lawn aeration is an innovative technique that starts by punching small holes across your lawn. These holes allow water, air and other nutrients to get into parts of the soil and grass that were previously compacted. By introducing more nutrients into the compacted area, the grass will grow in stronger at the roots and be greener and lusher. Aeration can also help to reverse the damage done by walking across the lawn, playing on the grass or putting heavy lawn furniture on the surface. When you don’t take time for aeration, there will be so many dense, compacted dirt particles that nutrients and water won’t be able to penetrate the grass blade.

What Is Overseeding?

Overseeding is a specialized technique designed to help lawns grow more lush. When used alongside aeration, it can have a big impact. One of our lawn care professionals will carefully spread new grass seed over your lawn after aeration. Because there are holes punched in the turf, the seeds will be able to take root before the cold comes and be ready to thrive next year. Overseeding is a great way to keep your lawn healthy and strong without investing in sod.

When Should You Aerate and Overseed?

As a rule of thumb, the best time to complete aeration and overseeding is late August through September. Days are warm enough for plant growth and the night is not so cold that things will freeze. We can perform these two services back to back at your property.
