We’ve had a few glimpses at spring so far in Maryland, and temperatures are going to continue to warm over the next few weeks. Now is a great time to start thinking about your turf for the spring and plan ahead to make your lawn as lush and green as possible. Here are some of our best spring lawn care tips to help you get started.

Start by Raking

Always walk carefully on your lawn at the start of the season, as it may be delicate after the winter and thawing from the cold. Before you start any other treatments, you should rake the surface of the lawn. This will help get rid of thatch and loosen any grass that has matted over the course of the winter. Never start the raking process on a day after rain or when your soil is soft, as this can lead to accidentally pulling up healthy grass instead of just getting rid of thatch.

It’s Not Too Late for Aeration

While we generally recommend scheduling your aeration for the fall, it can still do a great deal of good in the spring. Aeration is an excellent way to allow the grass in your yard more access to fertilizer, sunlight, air, and water. It helps your lawn to be thicker when you combine it with overseeding. We make the aeration process easy and can help ensure that your turf is healthy as possible this spring.

Fertilize Your Grass

Spring is an excellent time to apply fertilizer, and you can add some to your yard after we’ve visited two or three times to mow the lawn (or just let us know and we can add it for you!). If your yard has problems with crabgrass, we can guide you through the process of choosing the appropriate fertilizer for your yard that will lower the chances of crabgrass without sacrificing a lush lawn.

Water the Lawn

The amount of water that your lawn needs will depend on the amount of rain in the area gets and whether or not you are trying to grow new grass seed. In general, it’s best to water before 10:00 AM in the late spring and throughout the summer, as that prevents the water from evaporating before it has the chance to penetrate the ground and nurture the grass roots.
