This summer has been filled with intense heat, high humidity and plenty of summer sun. That triple-punch of lawn-battering weather has probably left your lawn looking faded, patchy and anything but lush. If you want to reclaim the beautiful green lawn you enjoyed all spring long, aeration and overseeding are the perfect combination. JFC Grounds Maintenance specializes in professional lawn care services, including aeration and overseeding, and we have worked to revitalize hundreds of lawns throughout the area.

Aeration 101

Lawn aeration works by perforating your lawn with small holes. These holes allow water, air and nutrients to reach previously-compacted parts of the soil. These nutrients will nurture grass at the root to encourage a healthier and stronger lawn. Lawn aeration also helps to reverse the compaction and damage done by walking across your yard and spending time on the grass during the summer months. When soil is compacted for long periods of time, there are so many dense particles that water, air and nutrients cannot reach deep enough in the soil to nourish all of the grass.

Overseeding 101

Overseeding is a clever technique to make a lawn grow back lusher and greener. It works by spreading grass seed over a lawn that already has grass. Since there will be small holes from aeration in the soil, these seeds will get a head start on growing before next year rolls around. If you don’t have overseeding performed in conjunction with aeration, the lawn will continue to naturally thin. Overseeding revitalizes lawns without costly sod. Late summer and fall are the best times to complete overseeding so that your lawn will have the best chance of great growth without many weeds.

The Right Time to Aerate and Overseed

August and September are the best months to aerate and overseed since the nighttime is cooler and the temperatures during the day are warm enough to promote growth. For the best possible results, we always suggest these two months to our Maryland customers.
