What Are Hardiness Zones?
Hardiness zones, which are also called landscaping zones and planting zones, are geographic regions that have similar temperatures on the coldest days of the year. In order to determine the hardiness zone of a region, you need to look up the average extreme minimum temperature. Depending on what the average extreme minimum temperature is for your house or business, it will be assigned a number between 1 and 13, as well as one of two sub-regions, known as A or B. This means that when you want to do your spring planting, you should look up what zone you live in. For example, Baltimore, MD has areas that are in zones 7a, 7b, and 8a.
Why Do Hardiness Zones Matter?
Hardiness zones help you quickly identify what flowers and plants will thrive on your property. Using the Baltimore example, someone in the 7a hardiness zone could plant something that is rated to zone 5, but they should not plant something that is rated for zone 8, because the winter is probably too harsh for a zone 8 plant to survive. Planting something that is not rated for your hardiness zone or above is often a waste of money and effort.
